Mr. R, Fitter Crew of Dunlop Motorcycle Road Racing Tires
To respect Mr. R’s wishes, I am not going to use his name here, but I will say that he was one of the nicest men I met that MotoAmerica weekend at Road America in Sheboygan, WI.
Mr. R is a fitter crew member for Dunlop Racing Tires and his job is incredibly important and one that can be easily overlooked on a big race weekend. You see, before a riders go out on track, his (or her) tires are brought in to Dunlop to be remounted and fit with a new tire. But here’s the tricky part, tires and wheels do not always balance automatically, so a skilled expert needs to properly balance each individual tire. If the tires are off even just a quarter of an ounce, the wheel will be thrown off balance and the motorcycle will vibrate violently as it’s speeding down the track. Basically, the rider’s life is in the fitter crew’s hands.
It sounds easier than it is, but trust me, when the heat is on and hundreds of tires and people are flying in and out the ability to get it right the first time is crucial. Thanks to Mr. R for taking the time to show me exactly how he accomplishes his job under the extreme pressure of time during a race!
